The Varsity Girls Tennis team dropped a marathon of a match on Friday night to the Eden Raiders by a score of 3-2. Springville got off to a hot start behind first singles player Hannah Yetter. Hannah played brilliantly all over the court as she was ripping ground strokes and making smart plays to get a two set win by a score of 6-1 and 6-1. In second singles action Maria Rumfola stepped up and played a tough three set match but eventually lost in the final set. Maria battled back after being down a set (3-6) and dominated set number two by a score of 6-0. Despite losing the last set Maria was clearly the better player between the two players. In third singles action Rachel O’Neal fell in straight sets (6-1, 6-3) but continues to demonstrate an incredible amount of development on the court.
In first doubles action Haley Corrone and Maddie Safford joined forces and won their match in straight sets by a score of 6-4 and 6-1. Haley did a terrific job with her ground strokes down the alley’s and Maddie was tremendous placing her serves at the opponents’ weaknesses. In second doubles action Anna Franklin and Shelby Buckley played into the night but eventually fell in three sets (6-7, 6-4, 6-4.) Anna was a beast at the net ending many points in favor of the Lady Griff’s. Shelby did a great job stepping in and playing well to give her team a chance to win.
Despite the loss the Lady Griff’s showed off quality depth as the team was down their regular first and second singles players. It was an excellent night all around for the team. The girls are now 1-3 overall and will host their first match on the season as they welcome Tonawanda on Monday afternoon.
