Design Competition announced for 9/11 Sculpture

A community effort is starting at S-GI High School to have a sculpture built in part from steel salvaged from the World Trade Center. Social studies teacher Mr. Robert Valenti recently became aware of the effort to place 9/11 steel in communities that would use the material in public sculptures or memorials. Community groups may request the steel from The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey in conjunction with 911 Families, an organization of families and survivors dedicated to oversight of 911 memorials and the reconstruction of the buildings on the site in an effort of long-term recovery.

Public and not-for-profit groups may request the size, shapes and weight of steel to be used. They are required to submit letters of request detailing the locations and nature of the memorials, and groups are responsible for picking up and delivering the steel to the communities. More information may be found online at 911families.org as well as, the district website.

At the high school, a committee has been formed including members of the social studies and art departments, and the art club. In an effort to involve as many students as possible in the process, a design competition will be held; open to all students grades K-12 at S-GI and St. Aloysius. Students should submit a drawing of their design and a written artist’s statement that describes their idea. Also, the student’s name address and phone number, along with parent names should be included. This proposal should be enclosed in an envelope and received by 3:00 on Feb. 10 at the high school.

All initial proposals will be reviewed in a “blind” jurying by the art club and staff members. The proposals will be put on display in the High school lobby, and on the district website. The public will be encouraged to respond to and comment on the proposals. The first proposals will be narrowed down to five finalists. Those proposals will be reviewed for suitability, creative use of materials, budget, and maintenance.

It is intended that the sculpture will be built by high school welding and tech students under the direction of Phillip Verratti. The proposed location is the high school courtyard. It is hoped that the sculpture could be finished in time for a spring dedication. However, the selection and delivery of the 9/11 steel may delay the schedule, in which case a September dedication would be planned.

For more information, interested persons should contact Mr. R. Valenti or Mr. C. Houseman at the high school, 592-3237, or at www.springvillegi.org.
