The Supreme Court in Action!

What’s been happening in our classes:

For the past two weeks in Social Studies Eight, both Mr. Karb’s and Mr. Beiter’s classes impersonated the Supreme Court of the United States.  Students were either justices or lawyers, recreating these four landmark cases:

Tinker v. Des Moines:     How much free speech should students have?

Gideon v. Wainwright:     Are the poor entitled to free lawyers?

Miranda v. Arizona:         What are a citizen’s rights upon arrest?

Acton v. Vernonia:   Should drug tests be allowed in schools?

Questions you might ask you kids:

1)           In this simulation, were you a lawyer or a judge?

2)           If you were a lawyer, what case(s) did you present?

3)           How did your trial go?

4)           Did the court rule in your favor?

5)           If you were a judge, what did you like about it?

6)          What’s difficult about being a Supreme Court justice?

Coming Attractions: Immigration and Ellis Island!

Within the next two weeks, your son or daughter will be asked to dress up as an immigrant, who will go through our very own Ellis Island. The year will be 1911. More pictures to follow!
