ECIC Championships

The Girls Varsity Swimming and Diving team is heating things up in the post-season. Last week 17 members of the team qualified for the ECIC championship meet at Clarence. This is a significant number of qualifiers who placed in the 2nd spot. The Lady Griffins has not reached the top two positions since 2011.

The Championship started out with our 200 Medley relay team of Erin Baker, Kendra Cook, Gabby Cerasani and Mara Swan Campanella who placed 4th.  Julia Uhteg placed 2nd in the 200 freestyle and 4th in the 500 freestyle.  Erin Baker dropped over 2 seconds in the 200IM and took 7th while also placing 4th in her 100 backstrokes.  Ella Ploetz, Abigail Blake, and Danika Westbook swam the 200 IM and exceeded their personal best times in the event. Gabby Cerasani swam the 50 freestyle and 100 fly placing 7th in both events. Both Taylor Casey who swam in the 50 and 100 freestyle and Cora Cudney who swam in the 50 free and 100 back swam personal bests. The 200 free relay team of Erin Baker, Taylor Casey, Kiersten Crone and Gabby Cerasani not only took 3rd place but their time of 1:53.37 qualified them for the Sectionals. The final event, the 400 freestyle relay of Kiersten Crone, Taylor Casey, Mara Swan Campanella and Julia Uhteg scored Team SG-I 2nd place. Corinne McAndrew took 3rd place in the 200 free dropping over 4 seconds and her goal of the meet was met when she dropped close to 10 seconds in the 500 free and clinching 2nd place. Meredith Gunsolus shaved time off her 200 free event and also participated in the 100 fly. Brooke Ruzycki rocked it in her individual events dropping time in both. She swam the 200 IM, dropped 2 seconds and placed 6th. In her 100 backstroke she dropped almost 4 seconds and took 3rd place overall. Kiersten Crone hit another goal with both her 50 Free (28.65 seconds) and 100 free (1:03) times.

This past weekend our varsity swimmers and divers competed in our Class C championship meet and took 2nd place out of 14 schools that attended.  Kate Regan and Emma Benz competed in diving on Friday.  Kate scored 322 points which qualified her for our Sectional Dive Meet this week.  At our swimming finals, Corinne McAndrew patched two 3rd place finishes in her 200 and 500 free individual events.  Kendra Cook took 3rd in her 100 breaststroke event with a personal best time. She also assisted the team in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays where Team SG-I placed 3rd. McAndrew was also part of the 400 free relay that took 3rd place.  Brooke Ruczycki and Meredith Gunsolus also made it back to finals on Saturday and provided points for SG-I.  The 200 freestyle relay of Erin Baker, Taylor Casey, Kiersten Crone and Gabby Cerasani took 3rd place and will be attending Sectionals this week.  Erin Baker took 4th in the 200 free shaving 3 seconds off her personal best time.  Gabby Cerasani took 4th in the 100 freestyle with a best time. Taylor Casey also took time off her 50 and 100 freestyle events and is a huge piece to our freestyle relays.
