Girls Swim Team Off to a Great Start

The girls swim team is off to a dynamite start with a 2-0 record.  Last week they kicked off their season with the annual non-league competition against Pioneer where we won 60-38.  Yesterday, the team faced their first league team, Cleveland Hill and won 75-23.  The lady Griffs are led by captains Hannah Bergner and Emily Schlemmer.  Shannon O’Hara is another leader on the team, being the only diver and working with a few 7th grade girls on the board.  Shannon has already crushed her PR 6-dive score this season with 231 points, and is a flyer for the team as well.  She puts a ton of work and time into going to St. Bonaventure 3 days a week, along with dual sporting with Cheerleading.  Bergner and Schlemmer were voted captains by their teammates because of their hard work in the water during practices and leadership qualities.  Emily is off to a great start in both her 200 and 500 events and keeping her mental game intact.  Bergner is versatile as a swimmer so Coach Karen Reynolds is utilizing her in different events this year to expand our line-up for when they face tougher teams (Eden and EA).  Carley Delaney is a force in the water and is going to dominate the 200 IM and 100 Breast this season.  Freshman Julia Uhteg and Riley Ballantyne are starting to click in the water and finding themselves hitting their best times already and it’s only the beginning of the season.

The team brought back 10 veterans, but picked up 13 new swimmers, 12 of which are from the middle school!  It’s extremely exciting for Coach Reynolds to not only get these numbers, but it’s even more thrilling when these young girls can swim, and swim fast! With this group the future looks BRIGHT and FAST, every swim coaches dream!
