Lifeguard Course Returns to SGI

Lifeguarding and water safety courses will be offered to the community through Springville-Griffith Institute this winter. The American Red Cross Lifeguarding Course, CPR/AED/First Aid training and Waterfront Certification will all be offered. Karen Reynolds and Christy Komenda will be teaching the courses. They are both certified American Red Cross Instructors that have been teaching this course for over 10 years.

The American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is designed to provide entry-level lifeguard participants the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to water emergencies, as well as breathing and cardiac emergencies, illnesses and injuries until emergency medical services personnel are able to take over. All participants must be 15 years old by the final class, as well as be able to complete a series of pre-requisite water exercises. Classes will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on February 29, March 7 and March 14 at the Springville High School pool. Participants should bring a bag lunch. Cost for the lifeguarding course is $180. In addition, a CPR/AED/First Aid class will be offered on March 7 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. in the Springville High School Art Room. The purpose of the American Red Cross CPR/AED/First Aid for Professional Rescuers course is to teach those with a duty to act (professional rescuers and health care providers) the knowledge and skills needed to respond appropriately to breathing and cardiac emergencies until more advanced medical personnel take over. Upon successful completion of this course, participants will receive a Red Cross CPR/AE/First Aid for Professional Rescuers certificate, valid for 2 years. The cost for the CPR/AED/First Aid course is $90.

Finally, a waterfront certification is offered to supplement the Lifeguarding Course. This certification teaches lifeguards the skills and knowledge needed to prevent and respond to emergencies in non-surf, open-water areas found at public parks, resorts, summer camps and campgrounds. This program runs the same days and times as the Lifeguarding course with additional videos and skills to complete. The cost of the lifeguarding course with waterfront certification is $190.
