SGI News Release 3.16.2020

March 16, 2020

Dear SGI Families:

Good afternoon. We care very much about our employees and the health and safety of our students and community. We are working hard to make sure that we’re making good decisions, but please know that the guidance is changing rapidly and there may be changes during this school closure that extends to April 19, 2020. Please check the website often for the most up to date information.  I will continue to communicate with you regularly.

  1. The District will be open Monday-Thursday from 8:00 am-3:00 pm. We will do a deep cleaning on Thursday afternoons and the buildings will be completely shut down from Thursday afternoon through Monday morning. Access cards will not gain entry outside of these hours. Teachers are able to access their classrooms during our open times but may not congregate anywhere in the buildings in groups of more than 2-4 people. Families who wish to visit a school building to pick something up must call the main office to arrange a time. This is to prevent large groups of people accessing the buildings at the same time.  School Nurses will be working Tuesday-Thursday of this week and are expected to contact all families whose children have a medication stored in the nurse’s office so that you can come in to pick it up.
  • A guidance document with recommendations went out to all teachers and guidance counselors today. Our first expectation is that all teachers will contact our students/families by Thursday, March 19, 2020, via email or a phone call home to let you know how they will be communicating their expectations for our students. Teachers may decide to call home, email, use Google classroom, the Remind app or whatever their usual means of communication may be. IF you haven’t heard from your child’s teacher(s) by the end of the day Thursday, March 19, please call or email the building principal. We appreciate at your patience as we all become accustomed to a new way of doing things.
  • We are offering free breakfast and lunch to all district children under the age of 18 years of age, reimbursable through NYS. There will be three drive up/walk up locations at Colden Elementary, Springville Middle School and the Collins Center Fire Hall from 11:00-1:00 Monday-Thursday. Children will receive 3 breakfasts and 2 lunches on Thursdays, to see them through Friday and Monday morning. In addition, those families who cannot make it to a drive-up location may call our dispatcher, Kristin Sercu, at 592-3278 to arrange Monday-Thursday delivery. Why delivery? For example, a 13-year-old may be babysitting younger children—that group of children has no way to get to a drive-up location so could access meal delivery. This SGI Culinary program begins on Wednesday, March 18, 2020.
  • Take care of yourself and your loved ones. Call with any questions, at any time.

All the best,

Kimberly Moritz, Superintendent of Schools
