When Karen Eckert isn’t teaching high school English at Springville-Griffith Institute High School, you may find her working on The Poeta Project. Through her time as a teacher, Eckert saw something troubling in high schools: students holding back creatively and giving up too easily. She started The Poeta Project in response. The project showcases inspiration, risk taking and perseverance when faced with a challenge. Eckert gives established artists a poem she has written and asks to create a piece of art drawing inspiration from the poem. In turn each artist also gives Eckert an additional piece of art for her to inspire a new poem.
Now the project is on display at the Buffalo Arts Studio through November 8, 2019. There are a total of 32 total poems and 32 pieces of art. The project has garnered a lot of worthy attention. The project received a grant from the Pollination Project, which made the exhibition possible. Additionally, the exhibition was featured in the October issue of Buffalo Spree magazine. The reception for the show is Friday October 25 from 5-8 at the Buffalo Arts Studio and the exhibition runs through November 8.
