SGI Wrestling Year in Review

The wrestling program had quite a change this year, with Coach Vogel and Coach Feltz swapping positions.  Coach Vogel moved to the Varsity Head Coaching position and Coach Feltz took over the modified program.  The JV/Varsity program moved to the HS this year with modified remaining at the Middle School.

The Springville Griffin wrestling team finished the season with a 9-4 dual meet record, 4-3 in the division (tied for third place). Early successes included 8 place finishers at the Maple Grove Tournament and a 4-1 record at the SGI Duals Tournament.  Over the course of the season we had numerous wrestlers place in individual tournaments and qualified 4 wrestlers to compete in the Section VI Division II Championships at Seneca Nation Community Center – Mikey Evans, Jared Hecht, Matt Evans and Ian Baker.  Ian Baker went 3-1 to take 3rd place.  Mikey Evans went 3-0 to win the tournament and become the first SGI wrestler in 15 years to qualify for the NYS Championships in Albany, NY. Mikey joined the Section VI team on their journey to the Times Union Center in Albany where he finished with a 2-2 record.

Many of our athletes are enrolled in Lake Erie Wrestling Club and will participate in an off-season weight-room routine.  Our hope is to grow the program and offer opportunities for the athletes to practice their skills throughout the off-season.
