Varsity Girls Basketball Team Starts Strong

The varsity girls basketball team has started their season 2-0 after a 50-32 win over Williamsville East in the first round of the Sacred Heart Tournament. The girls started off slowly going down 7-2 in the first quarter. They regained their form with excellent defense and big shots from Meg Rehrauer and Nyah Solly. The Lady Flames tried to negate the skills of Mackenzie Owens and Ivette Lewandowski but those two were able to get open shots for their teammates to help the girls take a 23-12 advantage going into halftime.

The ladies came out firing in the third quarter as the girls scored 18 points in 8 minutes to pull away for good. Once again Nyah Solly was superb as she had many hustle plays and nailed two three pointers. Mackenzie Owens had to handle immense pressure from the opposing defense but she did a great job getting her teammates involved and making the right play. The defining moments of the game came when Meg Rehrauer took the floor and played aggressively on both ends. Rehrauer was a beast on defense and hit multiple jumpers to enable the Lady Griff’s to pull away. Belle Oakley was fantastic rebounding and rolling to the rim, when she plays aggressively she is a handful!

Lady Griffs scorers on the night included ALL 8 PLAYERS!!! Ivette Lewandowski scored a game high 13 points, Mackenzie Owens chipped in 12 points, Nyah Solly had 9 points, Meg Rehrauer scored 6 points, Gracie Attebery scored 5 points, Jess Engel and Belle Oakley had 2 points and Rachel O’Neal capped off the scoring with 1 point. The girls are now 2-0 on the season and are back in action when they host division rival Depew Friday night at the high school. The championship game of the Sacred Heart Tournament takes place Saturday night. Great job ladies!
