After a long layoff the Varsity Girls Tennis Team returned to action on Friday night in a clash between the leagues top two teams. The Lady Griffs fell to Alden by a score of 5-0. Despite the result Lily Vanuga put together a strong outing and showed once again why she’s one of the best players in the league. Lily lost 5-7, 2-6 but showed much more control with her ground strokes and serves. In second singles Haylee Cerrone lost in straight sets 2-6, 2-6. Cerrone played a lot of long points and games that could have went either way. She continues to adapt well to the singles game as we finish the season. In third singles Maria Rumfola lost 2-6, 3-6. Maria did a much better job moving her opponent in the second set and hit multiple winners to show how bright the future is for SGI tennis. In first doubles action Grace Terhune and Ava Dziak lost 3-6, 1-6. Despite the result both girls showed flashes of their potential from the net and the baseline. In second doubles action Layla Gartler and Julie Bartoszek fell 0-6, 0-6. It was a great experience for both girls as they competed hard throughout the set. In exhibition action the duo of Emmie Weiss and Marissa Martens won 6-2. Both girls have steadily improved and finished many shots with great net play. Also. Elle Schosek competed in singles action but lost her set. Elle went up against a strong opponent and did some nice things from the baseline.The team will look to clinch sole possession of second place in ECIC 4 when they travel to Eden on Tuesday afternoon.
