The girls tennis team wrapped up their season last night with a loss to Alden in a doubleheader 5-0. In first singles action Evelyn Berry once again played impressive tennis before falling 6-8, 4-8. Evelyn pulled away early in the first set but couldn’t quite keep the momentum going. Despite the result, against a senior, Evelyn has proven to be a top player in ECIC and will be a force to be reckoned with moving forward. In third singles action Sharon Thomas, our lone senior, lost 2-8, 4-8. Sharon made some terrific adjustments in the second match and battled hard before falling. In first doubles action Peyton Wells and Taylor Wells lost 2-8, 6-8. The sisters started off slowly but found their footing quickly in the second match and showed how bright the future is for SGI doubles tennis. Both girls displayed incredible gains throughout the season. In second doubles action (the first match), Jackie Thompson and Alysha Evans lost 2-8. Despite the score it was really only a few areas to clean up and they would have been right there in the end. For the second match, Allissa Forquer joined Jackie Thompson but the girls eventually lost 4-8. The tandem showed off some great shots during the course of the match as Allissa played well at the net and Jackie continued her improved baseline play.
The match of the night belonged to second singles star Natalie Rumfola. Natalie lost her match 4-8, 6-8 but was absolutely phenomenal with her play. The points were so long that Natalie was battling darkness! It was an incredible effort by her and an admirable way to end the regular season.
With the loss the girls clinched third place and another winning record. Alden was a great challenge for the girls as all varsity players for the Bulldogs were seniors. The future certainly looks bright for our SGI girls!!!
Next up, Evelyn Berry and Natalie Rumfola travel to Miller Tennis Center today to compete in the ECIC Tournament. Good luck ladies!!!!!
