SPRINGVILLE (May 30, 2023) — The Springville-Griffith Institute Central School District Board of Education approved the appointment of Dr. Matthew Fisher to serve as Principal of Springville-Griffith Institute Middle School during a specially scheduled meeting on Tuesday evening.

Dr. Fisher currently serves as the High School House Principal at Orchard Park Central School District and will begin his tenure at SGI on July 1, 2023. Mrs. Shanda Duclon has been in the role for the past seven years and will leave at the end of this school year to assume the role of Assistant Superintendent for the Depew Union Free School District.

“I am pleased to welcome Matthew to the SGI family,” Superintendent of Schools James Bialasik said. “Matthew worked through a rigorous selection process and impressed stakeholders at each stage. He is a talented educator and leader who is excited and passionate about being here at SGI. I’m confident that Matthew will work tirelessly to continue the outstanding work happening in our middle school while forging strong relationships with students, staff, families and our great community.”

Dr. Fisher was selected for his emphasis on creating and fostering relationships and his focus on the “why” when making decisions. He is committed to maintaining a professional, student-driven environment at Springville Middle School and enhancing educational opportunities for all students.

“Every school is vital to its community in unique ways, and it is clear that there is a strong sense of pride in the Springville-Griffith Institute Central School District and Springville Middle School,” Dr. Fisher said. “At the middle school, the emphasis placed on school community-building under the banner of ‘Proud to be the Middle’ and the fostering of an inclusive school culture demonstrate the strong desire to support each and every child.”

Prior to his appointment at Orchard Park in 2015, Dr. Fisher served as Assistant Principal at Lake Shore High School. Before entering administration, he was a Technology Educator at Williamsville East High School for 10 years.

Dr. Fisher received a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Design and Urban Planning from SUNY at Buffalo in 2002. He also holds a Master of Education in Technology from Buffalo State College, a Master of Science in Educational Administration from Canisius College, a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from D’Youville College, and School Business Leader and School District Leader certifications.

He is an innovative school leader with over 18 years of experience in public education, who was the first in his family to earn a four-year degree. He credits his technology teacher, Mr. Godfrey, for changing the trajectory of his life

“My doctoral work drew into sharp focus my interest in working on the big-picture issues that affect education today. I desire to work directly with students, their families, teachers, and all school professionals in varied environments for the express purpose of improving the educational experience for all, especially for those who are growing up much the way I did,” Fisher added.
