Springville students are tackling holiday drunk driving head-on with a "Youth Voices. Holiday Choices. Campaign." contest. The initiative, S.A.D.D and Above the Influence, challenges students in grades 6-12 to design compelling anti-DWI messages that will be printed on paper bags and used at Cheap Chollies Wine and Liquor starting December 1st.
The project aims to reduce the annual spike in impaired driving fatalities often seen during the holidays—a dangerous period where statistics show 40% of crashes involve alcohol. The campaign is particularly timely in Erie County, which remains one of the state's highest-ranking counties for DWI arrests.
Students are competing for local prizes, including Kissing Bridge passes and gift certificates, with submissions due by November 7th. A judging panel of community leaders, including representatives from the Erie County Sheriff’s Office and local businesses, will select the winning designs, which will coincide with National Impaired Driving Prevention Month in December.
