Mrs. Ballantyne’s class had a fantastic Dr. Seuss Week in kindergarten! They kicked things off with Fox in Socks, celebrated The Cat in the Hat, and had a super silly Wacky Wednesday! On Thursday, they enjoyed Put Me in the Zoo, and rounded out the week by making Green Eggs and Ham! So many smiles, laughs, and fun learning moments. What a great week in kindergarten!

Can you believe 101 days of school have passed?! First grade at SES celebrated the 101st day of school by dressing as Dalmatians and participating in activities focused on being together for 101 days and on ways to make 101. As an added bonus, Mrs. Call's therapy dog, Dutches, visited the students. It brightened everyone's day!

Students in Mr. Kohl's and Ms. Hamister's classrooms wrapped up their Native American unit by selecting projects to showcase their learning. Students gathered data and researched materials about Native American artifacts. Other students opted to make a Google Slides presentation to share with the class. The model wigwams and longhouses continue to impress! The ingenuity and design of the projects have been outstanding!

Fifth graders at SES participated in Valentine's Day activities yesterday. In addition to Valentine's Bingo and a STEAM activity, the students created character hearts for their classmates. Each student made a heart with their name on it, and their classmates wrote a positive character trait that they exemplify. Mrs. Pazzuti also got in on the heartwarming activity!

SES students and families were led to a land of pure imagination as fourth- and fifth-graders performed the musical Willy Wonka Jr. Students took on roles of familiar characters like Willy Wonka, Charlie Bucket, and more. The entire cast gave a wonderful performance from the songs to the choreography under the direction of Mrs. Mealer. Please join us in congratulating the cast and volunteers on an excellent show!

Mrs. Ballantyne’s kindergarten had a groundhog-tastic Groundhog Day! They enjoyed reading many fun groundhog stories, creating a directed drawing of a groundhog, graphing their predictions about whether Phil would see his shadow, and making an adorable paper groundhog. They guessed it right — Phil saw his shadow, which means six more weeks of winter!

BFLO Worm Works visited SES 5th Graders to give them a hands-on experience about decomposition and the role worms play in this process. This experiential learning experience supported their ELA learning, as they are taking a deep dive into the unit "Beauty of Rot," which focuses on how decomposition benefits our world. In the spring, we will use the compost bin they created to build a garden outside the 5th-grade wing #RedefiningRural #ExperientialLearning
