Sixth-grade students "transformed" into wax versions of notable people that came to life for elementary visitors at the push of a button. From Lionel Messi and Queen Elizabeth to Jane Goodall, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and many more, the sixth graders did their research and dressed the part to present their person's life and achievements!

-Regents Algebra 1 and Lab
To be eligible for these courses, students must:
-Complete and submit an accelerated course application (science only). Ask your Science Teacher for an application. Applications are due by June 2nd, 2026.
-Take an entrance exam. Please see the description of exams on page 2 of this letter.
-Maintain a minimum average of 90% to remain in the class
SMS provides the following support to help students succeed in accelerated courses:
-Teacher access during the Triple E period
-Academic after-school study halls and test review sessions, multiple days a week
-Invigorating & engaging curriculum with experiential learning opportunities

Last week, Disabilities Awareness Week concluded with a heart-warming display of inclusion and sportsmanship at the Unified Basketball Game versus Hamburg. Held during the school day, this year, a rotation system allowed all SMS students to see either the first or second half of the game. It was an amazing display of teamwork as the two teams traded baskets in a tight, back-and-forth game with the crowd cheering every score. The Griffins ended with the winning score of 64-55.
As part of Disabilities Awareness Week, SMS students had the opportunity to "Mix It Up" in lunches. Teachers gave the students their assigned seats in lunch that allowed them to sit next to other students they do not usually sit next to. This allowed them to make new connections with their classmates, gain a better understanding of those who may have different experiences or abilities, and foster an environment of inclusion and belonging at the middle school!

This week, the SMS World Language Department held its 5th Annual Flag War in honor of Cinco de Mayo! Despite Mexico's victory on May 5, 1862, the French students won for the first time in four years under the guidance of their military strategist, Mrs. Deutschman.

Last week, middle school students were honored with an academic recognition breakfast! In addition to delicious bacon, sausage and strawberry waffles, the students received certificates for character awards and leading by example awards. Way to go, SMS!
Lily, a seventh-grader at SMS, recently created a tactile sensory board for her Kids Make A Difference Service Project! Each year, Mr. Karb, Mrs. Lewandowski and Mrs. Gaffeny assign the seventh-grade students a service project, which includes writing a business letter to a non-profit they are passionate about and performing 4-6 community service hours. Lily wrote her letter to Hidden Angel Foundation, an organization formed in honor of her uncle, Christopher Dougals, and her great-grandmother, Joyce Baye. The Hidden Angel Foundation’s primary goal is to promote the use of multi-sensory environments in therapeutic, recreational, and educational settings. The sensory board she created will be donated to The Children's League.

SGI SADD students recently attended a Youth Leadership Summit along with 200 others from WNY! The day was filled with team-building and leadership activities, demonstrations by police on the effects of alcohol on one's ability to perform tasks, and a presentation on the importance of creating supportive and inclusive communities. The day ended with a powerful message from sports analyst Ryan D. Leaf. Thank you to the Substance Free Coalition, Kids Escaping Drugs and The Character Council of Western New York for hosting this event!
Recently, seventh-grade students had the opportunity to hear from WNY Heroes representatives Shadasia Rogers and Dave College, who presented on the Pawsitive for Heroes Program. The visit was a result of seventh-grader Timothy Kley's Service Project. Each year, Mr. Karb, Mrs. Lewandowski and Mrs. Gaffeny assign the seventh-grade students a service project, which includes writing a business letter to a non-profit they are passionate about and performing 4-6 community service hours. Ms. Rogers and Mr. College and their service dogs shared about how the program provides service dogs for veterans, answering students' questions and allowing them to pet the dogs after the presentation. TIES members recently enjoyed a lively Craft Night at Sicamohr Arts, part of our continued partnership with this wonderful local studio. Students tapped into their creativity by designing their own fidgets — combining imagination, hands-on fun, and a chance to unwind together!
