A select group of art students from the middle and high school represented SGI in the Ready, Set, Create Student Art Competition sponsored by Erie 1 BOCES at Villa Maria College. Over 200 students from 13 school districts participated. The artists had just two hours to create an artwork on the spot based on the prompt “transformation”. Senior Amanda Tartick won first place in the Advanced Artist Division. Isabella Bateman (grade 10), and Rosalie Smith (grade 8) received the Judge’s Recognition Awards. The SGI Art Department is incredibly proud of all the participants who enthusiastically showcased their skills and talents while spontaneously expressing their creativity!

Sixth graders are engaged in fun phonics review activities! In learning centers, students worked on writing words from memory that included the targeted morphemes, blends, digraphs, and endings. In the game pictured, students rolled a die, with each number corresponding to a specific blend or word ending. Based on the number rolled, students were required to generate a word that contained the associated sound.

Seventh-grade students in Mrs. Deutschman's French class learned about Crepe Day on February 2nd. In France, that day is traditionally celebrated by eating crepes. Legend says that you need to hold a coin in one hand and attempt to flip the crepe with the other. If you successfully flip the crepe, you will have good luck the rest of the year! Students used a paper crepe and gave the crepe-flip their best shots!

Recently, seventh graders experienced Seneca culture firsthand during our annual Native American Culture Day, led by representatives of the Seneca Nation. Students rotated through interactive stations featuring corn husk doll-making and storytelling, Seneca instruments and traditional regalia, and cultural items and games — including learning about the history and importance of lacrosse. The day also highlighted the power of oral tradition and how stories carry teachings, values, and history across generations.
Thank you to our Seneca Nation partners and Mr. Karb for organizing this learning experience for our students! #ExperientialLearning #CommunityConnections #RedefiningRural
