From seeds to salsa - students in Mr. Vogel's and Mrs. Sacilowski's class are enjoying the fruits of their labor! Last spring, the class received a grant from the Springville Griffith Community Education Foundation to make their annual Urban Garden Project even bigger and better. With the funds, they were able to buy more seeds, soil, heat lamps and equipment to grow a wide range of flowers, herbs, and vegetables. The students planted everything and cared for them until summer, then everything made its way to the Erie County Fair. Now, the garden is back at SGI, and the students are reaping the benefits of what they planted. Last week, students made salsa out of the veggies and herbs they grew from seeds!

The East Aurora Invitational, one of Western New York’s premier cross country meets, took place on Saturday, bringing together top talent from across the region. The event featured hundreds of runners competing across divisions in a showcase of endurance, speed, and sportsmanship.

Springville athletes delivered standout performances in the small schools division. Elke Melnik captured 1st place overall in the girls’ race, showcasing her strength and determination against a highly competitive field. On the boys’ side, Scott Peterman earned an impressive 8th-place finish, solidifying his place among the top runners in the division.

The East Aurora Invitational has long been recognized as a key early-season test for cross country programs, offering athletes a chance to compete on a challenging course against some of the best in the region. This year’s event once again highlighted the depth of local running talent and the hard work of student-athletes preparing for a strong season ahead.

The new agriculture class is off to a great start at SMS! Last week, eighth-grade students in Ms. Uhrinek's class welcomed New York State FFA Officers and an officer from California's FFA to participate in a special activity. In small groups, the students were given "seed packets" with instructions on how to ensure each plant would succeed. The instructions included the planting depth and distance, but also had tips like "cucumbers and tomatoes have a toxic relationship," which helped to inform the layout of the garden on their desks. After planning out their garden, they reflected on their own "chaos gardens," considering who is around them who builds them up. From there, the students were asked to write letters of gratitude to someone who supports them. Many wrote heartfelt messages to family members and friends.

Griff’s Win Again! The Modified Football Team improved to 2–0 with a dominant 39–14 victory over Maryvale!

The defense came out locked in, pitching a first-half shutout and shutting down the ground game all night. On the other side of the ball, the offense was unstoppable — racking up over 350 yards and consistently moving the chains.

It was a complete team effort from start to finish, and the Griff’s walked away with another big win!

Special shout-out to our bus drivers for being some of the loudest fans in the stands — and for getting us safely through rush-hour traffic to the game!

Come cheer on the Griff’s next Thursday at Frontier High School as they look to keep the momentum rolling!

The girls' tennis team played an incredible match last night against division-leading East Aurora, but fell 3-2.

In first singles play, Evelyn Berry continued her dominance over D4 by winning 6-0, 6-0. Evelyn was impressive throughout the match and left zero doubt on who the best player in the league is.

In second singles action, Natalie Rumfola won
6-2, 6-0. Natalie shook off a slow start and pulled away easily with some steady shot-making and great court awareness.

In first doubles action, Taylor Wells and Peyton Wells lost 2-6, 5-7. This was the match of the night as the sisters battled valiantly, especially in the second set, but fell short. Still, the girls played hard and saw their play improve as the match progressed

In second doubles action, Kailyn Sprague and Chloe Dinse Johnson lost 4-6, 0-6. The girls started off strong but couldn’t keep the momentum going into the second set. Both girls had moments of good play.

In third doubles action, Jackie Thompson and Teerada Dickson lost 0-6, 3-6. The girls fought back in the second set, putting EA on their heels, but couldn’t pull the win out.

In exhibition singles action, Maya Schunk lost 3-6. In exhibition doubles play, Lily Wantuck and Rory Sarver lost 2-6. The tandem of Amileah Muhisin and Gianna Nevins lost 1-6.

Despite the result, the Lady Griffs sit in sole possession of second place and have a lot to be proud of with the hard work they put in to push the visiting Blue Devils. Great job, ladies!

Our middle school FFA held its first-ever meeting this past Thursday. Students spent time learning about the different opportunities FFA has to offer. They then made their own FFA emblem cookies while learning what each part of the emblem means. We are so excited to be able to offer FFA to our middle schoolers and can’t wait to see what great things they do this year!

Families of SGI High School Juniors:
In preparation for the upcoming SAT and ACT, a practice version of the SAT called the PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test) will be offered on October 15 from 8:00-11:30AM during the school day as a means of exposing students to the types of questions and testing conditions experienced with an actual SAT. The PSAT also functions as a qualifying test for a National Merit Scholarship (NMSQT stands for National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test). These are awarded to students with competitively high scores.

Those students interested in taking the PSAT/NMSQT must sign up online at the following link (you may need to create a free account if you do not yet have one) and register by October 1. The cost is $18, and fee waivers are available to those who qualify for free/reduced lunch by visiting the guidance office. Contact us with any questions, concerns, or suggestions at 716-592-3284.

The girls' tennis team won their third match in a row by defeating Alden 3-2.

In the first singles play, Evelyn Berry won 6-0, 6-1. Evelyn couldn’t be stopped on the day as she pounded multiple groundstroke winners and had a great day serving.

In the second singles play, Natalie Rumfola won
6-3, 6-3. Natalie was steady throughout the contest as she played long points and hit some clutch shots when it mattered most.

In first doubles action, Taylor Wells and Peyton Wells won 6-1, 7-5. The sisters dominated the first set with terrific all-around play. In the second set, the girls had to dig deep, and they did so to take home the second set.

In second doubles action, Teerada Dickson and Alexis Beckwith lost 4-6, 2-6. The girls played a strong match and showed great growth in the contest.

In third doubles action, Chloe Dinse-Johnson and Kailyn Sprague lost 2-6, 5-7. The girls rallied in the second set to get back in the match, but couldn’t quite put it all together. Still, it was a strong showing!

In the exhibition singles play, Gianna Nevins won
6-2. In doubles action, Maya Schunk and Abby Adkison lost 0-6.

The girls will now turn their attention to a huge league showdown as they play host to East Aurora. This match has the potential to move Springville into first place. Come out and watch the girls compete!
