The Varsity SGI football team celebrated Senior Night on Thursday with an impressive shutout 49-0 vs Tonawanda, making their record 6-1 so far this season. Next week, they travel to Alden on Thursday, 10/22, for their last game of the regular season at 7 pm.

High school students recently attended the Careers in Education Conference. The students heard a keynote speaker discuss teachers' impact on the next generation. They then were able to choose information sessions that interested them, such as certifications and pathways, elementary literacy, portrait of a graduate work, AI in education, and more. This was a great experience for students interested in becoming teachers to learn more about the field of education!

SGI art and science students participated in post-homecoming activities by cleaning up the remnants of the festivities. For Mrs. Hashem's science class, the cleanup was the perfect bridge from their unit on the interactions between Earth's systems and their unit on Earth's surface processes. They discussed the Cattaraugus Creek watershed and followed Spring Brook to Cattaraugus Creek, all the way to the Atlantic Ocean. Students kept track of the types of trash they collected and tallied individual pieces. The data will be added to the citizen science app "Clean Swell" through the Ocean Conservancy. Students will then spend lab time analyzing the data, creating graphs of what was found, exploring other citizen science initiatives, and brainstorming ways to make these types of events more sustainable in the future.

The varsity girls tennis team competed in their season last night with a tough 4-1 loss to EA.
In first singles action, Evelyn Berry dominated from start to finish, winning 6-0, 6-1. Evelyn cemented her spot as the best player in D4 and gave the Griffs an early lead.
In the second singles play, Natalie Rumfola lost a tough 6-1, 3-6, 5-7 match. Natalie once again never quit and made some terrific shots on the evening. The result doesn’t change a great senior campaign from one of the most consistent players the program has had.
In first doubles action, Taylor Wells and Peyton Wells lost 1-6, 6-7. The girls showed great toughness by battling back to make the match close. It was a terrific season for the sisters as they showed great progress over the course of the season.
In second doubles play, Jackie Thompson and Kailyn Sprague lost 3-6, 0-6. The girls had some strong play along the way, but couldn’t quite string together enough consistent shots. Still, the duo played well together on the season and showed steady growth.
In third doubles action, Jay Dean and Lexy Beckwith lost 1-6, 0-6. The duo showed great grit and hustle on the evening while displaying solid shot-making.
In exhibition action, Teerada Dickson and Chloe Dinse Johnson lost 2-4. Lilly Wantuck and Maya Schunk lost 2-4. Rory Sarver and Claire Holmer lost 3-4. And Siiri Salo with Jay Dean lost 2-4.
Despite the season's ending result, the team had a terrific season. Finishing 10-6 overall, 6-2 in league, sole possession of second place in D4, the team placed three players on the all-league team, and Evelyn Berry is still competing in sectionals. The program would like to thank seniors Chloe Dinse Johnson, Taylor Wells, Natalie Rumfola, Teerada Dickson, Siiri Salo, Jackie Thompson and Alexis Beckwith for everything they’ve done for the SGI girls' tennis program. You will be missed!

Last week, Springville-Griffith High School hosted the WNY College Consortium for juniors and seniors. They had the opportunity to explore many higher education options!

The varsity girls' tennis team had four members compete in the prestigious ECIC Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
First up were Taylor Wells and Peyton Wells as they took on Williamsville East. The sisters battled valiantly but couldn’t quite pull off the win, losing 1-6, 0-6. Still, it was a competitive match, and the girls gave a great effort. Speaking of the sisters, they were named to the first team in D4 for doubles. Great job, ladies!
In singles play, Natalie Rumfola took on Lancaster, and she won a great match: 6-1, 6-3.
It was a fantastic effort as Rumfola played one of the best matches of her career. The win marked her first ever at ECIC’s and moved her on into the next round.
Awaiting Natalie was the one seed in the tourney and a high-level player from Clarence. Natalie lost 0-6, 0-6, but she never quit and kept her head held high. Despite playing the best player in the tourney (and inevitable winner of the event), Natalie never lost her composure and represented herself well on the courts.
The final member of SGI, Evelyn Berry, opened up her tournament by defeating Maryvale
6-0, 6-0. Berry was a beast from the baseline and was terrific from the service line.
In the next matchup, Evelyn needed a win to clinch a spot for Saturday's matches. Evelyn did just that as she defeated Hamburg by a score of 6-1, 7-5. Berry fought back being down 4-5 in the second set and never looked back. It was a great win and showed terrific poise from the sophomore superstar.
For her third match on the day, Evelyn went up against Sweet Home. They played earlier in the season to a very competitive match, and another one took place on this night. Evelyn lost 3-6, 3-6, but the matchup lived up to the hype as both players traded strong baseline strokes and had many great points.
Despite the result, Evelyn advanced to Saturday to play two matches; one win would ensure a spot in the sectional tournament. In her first matchup, Evelyn played Williamsville East and won 6-2, 6-1. Evelyn was on fire throughout the contest as she moved well around the court and hit some big-time forehands to get the win.
Next up was a date against the top player from Lancaster. Berry lost 1-6, 0-6, but still put together a great two-day stretch of tennis.
With Saturday’s result, Evelyn finished in 6th place overall (out of 32 participants) and finished one spot higher compared to last year's result. She was also named first team D4 for singles.
Evelyn will take on the top player from LewPort this Friday at Miller Tennis Center.
Lastly, the girls still have unfinished business as they play host to East Aurora today to get a share of the D4 title. We should start around 4:45 pm, so come out and support this great team!

The SGI Cross Country team competed at the 2026 McQuaid Invitational on October 3 at Genesee Valley Park. The meet featured a very deep field from New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Canada, and beyond.
The team had an outstanding day, highlighted by a dominant individual victory from senior captain Elke Melnik.
Melnik won the Girls Varsity A-1 race, covering the 3-mile course in 18:27.5. She established herself as one of the strongest runners in the entire small-school field of close to 300 runners.
The girls showed tremendous depth behind Melnik. Hazel Zielen-Ersing finished 12th in 19:26.6, followed immediately by Caitlyn Rzepecki in 13th at 19:27.3. Senior Isabella Bogner ran 20:42.3 for 50th, while Deseray Hines added a 21:15.1 performance in 74th.
That gave Springville the top team spot with a scoring total of 150 points, with the first three runners all finishing inside the top 13. Most impressively, the team put together a three-runner pack separated by only 59.8 seconds, an excellent sign heading toward championship season.
The boys were led by Damien Shea, who ran 18:01.7, placing 91st in a highly competitive A-1 field. Brendan Wantuck followed in 111th at 18:22.0, while Frank Keeton and Frederick Heary ran nearly identical times of 19:17.5 and 19:18.1. Matthew Becker rounded out the scoring five in 20:10.1.
The biggest takeaway was the strength of the girls' team. Winning the race individually while putting three runners in the top 13 demonstrates both front-end quality and team depth. Melnik's 18:27.5 was particularly impressive, coming against a field that included several of the area's strongest small-school programs.
For the boys, the McQuaid field provided a valuable championship-level test. The spread from Shea to the fifth runner was just over 2:08, and the tight grouping of Keeton and Heary gives Springville something to build on as the postseason approaches.
In modified action, Emma Barrio was Springville Girls' top finisher, and Sawyer Fuhrman was the top modified Boys finisher.

The JV Girls Soccer team won against Iroquois on Thursday. Down 1-0 for most of the game, the girls never gave up. Goalie Nikita Eckam saved a penalty kick, keeping it a one-goal game. With eight minutes left, Vanessa Fox scored, assisted by Harper Nadolny and Aubrey Henry. And then Kay Hutchinson calmly scored the winning goal (a penalty kick) as time expired to win it at the buzzer.
The girls did an awesome job defending, passing, and being first to the ball, resulting in a total team win. Their next game is against Allegany-Limestone on Monday.

The senior class enjoyed their time together on their senior trip to Pittsburgh! The students visited Laurel Caverns State Park, the Pittsburgh Zoo, a scenic overlook of the city and more.

The varsity girls' tennis team continued its winning streak with a big 5-0 win over Lake Shore last night.
In first singles action, Evelyn Berry dominated, winning her match 6-0, 6-0. Evelyn never let up as she continued to pound forehand winners and solid serves.
In the second singles play, Natalie Rumfola won
6-3, 6-1. Natalie’s ground strokes were fantastic on the day as she pulled multiple winners from the baseline using both her forehand and backhand.
In first doubles action, Taylor Wells and Peyton Wells won 6-2, 6-3. The girls played a solid match, and both were incredible at the net with their volleys. Peyton’s hustle on the day was noticeable, and Taylor’s first serves were tough in the second set.
In second doubles play, Jackie Thompson and Kailyn Sprague won 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (10-3) in a closely contested matchup. The girls dominated the first set but struggled in the second. Both Kailyn and Jackie buckled down in the third-set tiebreaker and hit some clutch shots to deliver the win.
In third doubles action, Jay Dean and Lexy Beckwith won 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (10-8) in another closely contested matchup. Both Jay and Lexy responded well to the first set loss and played a fantastic match to get the win.
In exhibition play, Chloe Dinse Johnson and Teerada Dickson won 6-0. Rory Sarver and Claire Holmer won 6-0. And Lilly Wantuck and Maya Schunk won 6-0.
The girls now find themselves at 7-4 overall and 5-1 in D4 and welcome the first-place EA Blue Devils this afternoon. This match will give the girls a chance to avenge an earlier season loss and hopefully a share of the D4 championship. The match should start around 5:00pm, so come out and support the squad!
