Last week, Springville-Griffith Institute High School students had the opportunity to take half the day just to focus on wellness! Wellness is one of five core pillars in the district's strategic plan. Organized by the student-led High School Wellness Committee, students were able to choose courses based on their interests and needs, rotating between stations during three sessions. Some of the sessions got their heart rate up, like human foosball, free time in the weight room, swimming and Ga-Ga Ball in the gym. Others helped them recharge, like yoga, healthy cooking, petting animals, and making stress balls. And others help stimulate their minds, like chess, a scavenger hunt and trying French Impressionism, and so much more.

Recently, our high school agriculture students shared some of their knowledge with Colden 4th graders! Avalyn and Miley shared the story of "Lucky Ducky," who is on the hunt for a four-leaf clover. Then the students were able to plant their own clovers in the hopes of finding their own lucky four-leaf clover. They added dirt, seeds and water to cups before placing them on the windowsill to grow. Before the older student left, they answered questions about agriculture and FFA.

A select group of art students from the middle and high school represented SGI in the Ready, Set, Create Student Art Competition sponsored by Erie 1 BOCES at Villa Maria College. Over 200 students from 13 school districts participated. The artists had just two hours to create an artwork on the spot based on the prompt “transformation”. Senior Amanda Tartick won first place in the Advanced Artist Division. Isabella Bateman (grade 10), and Rosalie Smith (grade 8) received the Judge’s Recognition Awards. The SGI Art Department is incredibly proud of all the participants who enthusiastically showcased their skills and talents while spontaneously expressing their creativity!

Forty-eight SGI students, along with chaperones, visited Quebec City, Canada, last month! They explored the city and experienced Carnaval - one of the world's largest winter festivals in Quebec. They toured the St. Anne de Beaupré Cathedral and saw Montmorency Falls. They also did some shopping and experienced the local food and culture. Another highlight of the trip was dog sledding, tubing, and touring the Ice Hotel - one of only two in the world. Students were able to practice their French language and learn about the local cultures.

The varsity girls' basketball team had a very busy February break, which entailed three regular season games and a playoff contest.
First off, Springville traveled to local powerhouse Iroquois and gave them everything they could handle for 32 minutes. The girls were down 41-39 at halftime, but went punch-for-punch with one of the best offenses in WNY. The girls eventually lost 82-63, but they gave Iroquois quite a scare. Scorers on the night were: Sullivan- 2, Illig-2, Oakley- 25, Franklin-7, Enser-6, and Roy-19. The team hit a season-high 11 three-pointers in the contest.
It was a quick turnaround for the team as they went to Maryvale the following day, in an afternoon contest. The girls walked away with a strong 55-22 victory over the Lady Flyers. The team entered halftime up 27-15. The girls knew they had another gear, and they turned it up in the third quarter with a 15-5 showing. Scorers were Sullivan- 5, Illig- 2, Oakley-15, Franklin-3, Enser-7, Ruzycki-2, and Roy-21.
In their regular season finale, the girls traveled to Hamburg to take on the large school Lady Bulldogs. The theme of the day was defense as the Lady Griffs held Hamburg to 18 points in three quarters. That was just enough as the Griffs won 43-35. The girls’ intensity on defense and the steady post play of Aubrey Roy, turned out to be the difference. Scorers on the day were: Illig-4, Oakley-6, Franklin- 4, Enser-5, and Roy-24.
With that result, the team finished the regular season at 15-4 and regular season D4 Champs, the first title in 20 years.
In the playoffs, the girls hosted a familiar foe in JFK. The team gave an incredible effort throughout the afternoon but eventually lost 41-37. The team was down by as many as 12 points in the second half, but once again remained committed to giving great effort and energy to their defense. They did just that and eventually found themselves up by one point. Unfortunately, the team couldn’t quite make enough plays at the end and lost in the first round of the playoffs. One of the best performances of the year came from none other than senior sniper Dani Oakley. Oakley scored 11 points in the 4th quarter alone to will her team back into the game. The contest saw the Lady Griffs’ other two seniors, Lilly Enser and Leah Franklin, turn the game with their hustle and steals on defense. Scorers on the day were: Sullivan-1, Oakley-28, Franklin-4, Roy-4.
Despite the result, our team has so much to be proud of:
Finished with an outright D4 championship
Finished the regular season ranked in the Buffalo News at #9
15-5 overall record
Ranked #30 in NYS for Class B
Be sure to congratulate team members throughout the week. This team did so many special things on and off the court. Great season, ladies!

Springville High School students in Mr. Shelley's and Mr. Baumgartner's technology classes took part in the annual cardboard boat races before break! The students designed and created their own boats and paddles using cardboard, plastic sheeting, duct tape and wood for the oar. Principal Janora also took her turn for a few rounds!

The SGI Lady Griffs took the court last night in a huge D-4 matchup and came away with a thrilling 35-32 overtime victory over Eden. The girls started off slowly as they were outscored in the first quarter 4-0. That didn’t last long as the team opened the second quarter and started finding their offense behind two three-pointers from Dani Oakley and 6 points from Aubrey Roy. The girls entered the locker room down 14-12 at halftime, but they felt great about their chances. That was because the defensive intensity from Lilly Enser, Bella Sullivan, Kelcie Illig and Leah Franklin was incredible. Their ball pressure and hustle were huge on a night where it was hard to score consistently. Caroline Blidy also stepped up with some big rebounds and great defense. The team entered the fourth quarter down three points, but they refused to go away as Lilly Enser hit a big layup to tie the game with little time left. In the overtime period, the girls had to play with a lot of foul trouble, and they did so perfectly. The team defense continued to get huge stops, and Dani Oakley buried a huge three to put the girls up for good. Aubrey Roy hit a huge layup to put the girls up late in overtime. Eden had the ball with about 9 seconds left, and Springville needed one stop. The girls got just that as an Eden three-pointer fell short, and the Griffs took the win. Scorers on the night were:
Dani Oakley- 17 points
Aubrey Roy- 12 points
Lilly Enser- 5 points
Bella Sullivan- 1 point
The girls are now 12-3 overall and 10-1 in league play. The girls will host Alden tonight and honor their three amazing seniors. Also, with a win, this would ensure at the very least a share of the league championship which hasn’t been done in the last 20 years. Come out and cheer these girls on, and to honor: Dani Oakley, Lilly Enser and Leah Franklin on senior night.
