In boys tennis action, Bryce Cook returned to the 2nd day of the ECIC Tournament. And once again, Bryce was spectacular and represented himself and the school at a high standard.
In his first match of the day, Bryce took on the first singles player from Hamburg and won 6-4, 6-7, and 6-1. Bryce showed off great stamina on the day and stellar shot-making from the baseline. Bryce’s ability to stay patient and play smart was a huge reason for the win.
Next up was an opportunity to qualify for sectionals, as he faced the top player from Iroquois. Bryce once again made his opponent work for every point, and never quit, but eventually fell in three sets by a score of:
3-6, 7-5, 0-6.
Despite the final result, nobody had a tournament like Bryce had. He played five matches, over two days, and had four of those matches go to three sets. Bryce put SGI boys tennis on the map with his performances in a tournament involving only the very best players in the area. Be sure to congratulate Bryce on an incredible showing.

Last week, Disabilities Awareness Week concluded with a heart-warming display of inclusion and sportsmanship at the Unified Basketball Game versus Hamburg. Held during the school day, this year, a rotation system allowed all SMS students to see either the first or second half of the game. It was an amazing display of teamwork as the two teams traded baskets in a tight, back-and-forth game with the crowd cheering every score. The Griffins ended with the winning score of 64-55.

The varsity boys tennis team sent members to the prestigious ECIC Tennis Tourney, which was held at East Aurora yesterday.
In singles action, Garrison Heichberger lost 1-6
0-6 to Clarence. Garrison never quit and played a number of competitive games in each set despite the result.
In doubles action, Forrest Prouty and Avery Noeson lost 3-6, 3-6 to Lancaster. It was a match filled with opportunity and solid play. The boys couldn’t quite get the result they wanted but still played a fine match.
In doubles action, Matt Baumgartner and Liam Bobseine lost a thrilling three-set match: 4-6,
7-6 and 6-7 to Sweet Home. The boys consistently traded points and games with their opponents throughout the three sets. Matt and Liam both hit some incredible shots on the day and have a lot to be proud of with their effort.
Wrapping up the action on the day was Bryce Cook, and he left his mark with some incredible tennis. First up was a three-set win over Williamsville North by a score of 6-2, 4-6, and 6-3. Bryce battled with his opponent and made some nice adjustments with his play to get the win. Next up was a date with a player from Lancaster. Once again, Bryce went the distance and won: 2-6, 7-6 and 6-2. Bryce was excellent with his forehand and hit some big serves to advance in the tournament. For his last match of the day, Bryce squared off with Orchard Park and lost 1-6, 1-6. Bryce gave a great effort and never quit. With that result, Bryce advances to day 2 of the tournament as he hopes to qualify for sectionals. His first match is at 3:00 pm at EA this afternoon.

In the first singles play, Bryce Cook lost 0-6, 1-6. Bryce played one of the area's best players and wasn't overwhelmed. Cook nailed multiple aces and winners on the day.
In second singles action, Garrison Heichberger lost 4-6, 6-7 (8-10) in one of the best matches of the year. Heichberger was at his best from the baseline on the day and was consistent from the service line. Despite the loss, Garrison played one of his best matches of the season.

The boys did a great job rebounding from the second set loss to focus on the decisive third set. In third doubles play, Will Prinino and Kaiden Bialasik won 6-3, 6-3. The pair were impressive on the day, with Kaiden striking the ball consistently well from the baseline and Will being aggressive at the net.

Surrounded by coaches and family, Lillian Enser, Daniella Oakley, James Rola, Aubrie Stanisewski and Ryan Miga made their commitments for next year official. As part of Disabilities Awareness Week, SMS students had the opportunity to "Mix It Up" in lunches. Teachers gave the students their assigned seats in lunch that allowed them to sit next to other students they do not usually sit next to. This allowed them to make new connections with their classmates, gain a better understanding of those who may have different experiences or abilities, and foster an environment of inclusion and belonging at the middle school!

SGI's own JoAnn DePue was honored as the Leadership Director of the Year at the School Administrators Association of New York State's (SAANYS) Region 12 Annual Awards Ceremony on May 11. Superintendent Bialasik presented Mrs. DePue with the award during the ceremony at Columns Banquet Center. Mrs. DePue is the Director of Technology, Data and Assessment for the district. Please join us in congratulating Mrs. DePue on this well-deserved recognition of her leadership within SGI and beyond.

April showers bring May flowers, but April eggs bring May chicks! Mrs. Caldwell's kindergarten class has been incubating eggs and recently watched the chicks hatch! They shared the experience with the rest of Colden Elementary and made a chicken craft.
