The School Food Authority Lunch Trailblazer Award is a distinction that highlights innovation and leadership in school nutrition. This national award acknowledges the commitment of our culinary professionals to providing high-quality, nutritious meals that support student success.
“By embracing creativity, incorporating local foods, creating scratch menu items, and continually enhancing the dining experience, our team demonstrates excellence in meeting the needs of our school community,” SGI Culinary Director Laura Watson said. “We also feel that all students have a voice and invite them to be a part of our ‘Little hands, Big Ideas’ focus groups to discuss menu ideas. Our team has also advanced our farm-to school connections through our work with the USDA Scales grant. We are proud to be a leader in advancing school meal programs and grateful for the recognition of our continued dedication to nourishing students.”

First up was the doubles team of Taylor Wells and Peyton Wells. They took on a team from Clarence and lost 0-6,0-6. Despite the result, the girls had a phenomenal year as the first doubles team, and they were selected to the D$ All-Star team!
Next, Natalie Rumfola took on Hamburg and lost in straight sets 3-6, 2-6. Natalie battled throughout the contest, showing why she was such a consistent force for her team. Despite the loss, Natalie was undefeated in D4 play and holds non-league wins over Mt. Mercy, Williamsville South and Lake Shore.
Lastly, Evelyn Berry was finally able to demonstrate to all of ECIC why she will be a force from now until the time she graduates. Evelyn's first match on the day was against Orchard Park, and she won 6-0, 6-0. Next up, Evelyn faced off against Amherst's first singles player, with a trip to day 2 of the tournament on the line. Evelyn won a two-and-a-half-hour thriller by a score of 7-6, 6-7, 6-3. It was the match of the day as both players competed at a high level. Evelyn's mental toughness and physical stamina proved to be the difference. Evelyn then went on to face the top player out of Orchard Park and lost 0-6, 1-6. That particular result couldn't tarnish how special a day the freshman superstar out of Springville had.
The next day, Evelyn had to play two additional matches. With one win, Evelyn would secure a spot in the sectional tennis tournament. Her first-round opponent was the top player from Lancaster. Evelyn lost a tough 3-set match by a score of 6-7, 7-5, 2-6. Despite the result, Evelyn knew she had to mentally move forward and prepare for her next opponent. Evelyn ended up playing the top player out of Sweet Home, and she took home a tough 7-6, 6-4 victory. This match saw Evelyn down multiple times, but as has been the case all year, Evelyn refused to go away. Her tremendous shot-making and clutch play carried her to the win.
The win gave Evelyn a 7th-place singles finish in the tournament (comprised of the best players from D1-D4) and a trip to the sectional tournament. Evelyn's match time and opponent will be revealed later this afternoon.
Big congratulations to all our players who participated in the tournament, and a huge round of applause for Eveleyn Berry as she continues her season!
