Fifth graders at SES participated in Valentine's Day activities yesterday. In addition to Valentine's Bingo and a STEAM activity, the students created character hearts for their classmates. Each student made a heart with their name on it, and their classmates wrote a positive character trait that they exemplify. Mrs. Pazzuti also got in on the heartwarming activity! #InclusionAndBelonging #RedefiningRural

SES students and families were led to a land of pure imagination as fourth- and fifth-graders performed the musical Willy Wonka Jr. Students took on roles of familiar characters like Willy Wonka, Charlie Bucket, and more. The entire cast gave a wonderful performance from the songs to the choreography under the direction of Mrs. Mealer. Please join us in congratulating the cast and volunteers on an excellent show!

The SMS students in Mrs. R. Benz's period 5 class have learned that hard work really pays off. Mrs. R. Benz recently held a class competition for the class that completed the most i-Ready lessons. i-Ready is an online program for reading and/or mathematics that helps determine students' needs, personalize their learning, and monitor progress throughout the school year. They celebrated their win with a hot cocoa bar and a movie.

The SGI Lady Griffs took the court last night in a huge D-4 matchup and came away with a thrilling 35-32 overtime victory over Eden. The girls started off slowly as they were outscored in the first quarter 4-0. That didn’t last long as the team opened the second quarter and started finding their offense behind two three-pointers from Dani Oakley and 6 points from Aubrey Roy. The girls entered the locker room down 14-12 at halftime, but they felt great about their chances. That was because the defensive intensity from Lilly Enser, Bella Sullivan, Kelcie Illig and Leah Franklin was incredible. Their ball pressure and hustle were huge on a night where it was hard to score consistently. Caroline Blidy also stepped up with some big rebounds and great defense. The team entered the fourth quarter down three points, but they refused to go away as Lilly Enser hit a big layup to tie the game with little time left. In the overtime period, the girls had to play with a lot of foul trouble, and they did so perfectly. The team defense continued to get huge stops, and Dani Oakley buried a huge three to put the girls up for good. Aubrey Roy hit a huge layup to put the girls up late in overtime. Eden had the ball with about 9 seconds left, and Springville needed one stop. The girls got just that as an Eden three-pointer fell short, and the Griffs took the win. Scorers on the night were: Dani Oakley- 17 points Aubrey Roy- 12 points Lilly Enser- 5 points Bella Sullivan- 1 point
The girls are now 12-3 overall and 10-1 in league play. The girls will host Alden tonight and honor their three amazing seniors. Also, with a win, this would ensure at the very least a share of the league championship which hasn’t been done in the last 20 years. Come out and cheer these girls on, and to honor: Dani Oakley, Lilly Enser and Leah Franklin on senior night.

The varsity girls basketball team rebounded from its first league loss of the season in dominant fashion by beating Cleveland Hill by a score of 53-19. The girls started hot, as Dani Oakley and Lilly Enser hit two three-pointers, which helped put the Griffs up 18-5 going into the second quarter. That quarter saw strong interior play from Aubrey Roy, as she poured in 5 points and was a force underneath. The girls entered halftime up by 13 points but knew they could find another gear. They did just that, as the girls dominated the 3rd quarter, winning it by a score of 15-2, and had some tremendous hustle plays out of Leah Franklin. The girls held strong defensively and finished the game strong behind a late 3-pointer from Bella Sullivan. Scorers on the night were: Aubrey Roy- 15 points Dani Oakley- 14 points Leah Franklin- 8 points Lilly Enser- 7 points Bella Sullivan- 5 points Kelcie Illig- 2 points
The girls are now 11-3 overall and are 9-1 in league play. The team will travel to Eden in a pivotal league match-up against the Lady Raiders on Tuesday night.

Sixth graders are engaged in fun phonics review activities! In learning centers, students worked on writing words from memory that included the targeted morphemes, blends, digraphs, and endings. In the game pictured, students rolled a die, with each number corresponding to a specific blend or word ending. Based on the number rolled, students were required to generate a word that contained the associated sound.

Mrs. Ballantyne’s kindergarten had a groundhog-tastic Groundhog Day! They enjoyed reading many fun groundhog stories, creating a directed drawing of a groundhog, graphing their predictions about whether Phil would see his shadow, and making an adorable paper groundhog. They guessed it right — Phil saw his shadow, which means six more weeks of winter!
