Mrs. Crosby's UPK class read about and explored the weather this week! First, they read the book "Cloudette," by Tom Lichtenheld. It's a story about a tiny cloud that wants to do big things! After a bad storm, Cloudette finds herself in a new place with unfamiliar faces. After some determination, she uses her cloud powers to create rain, helping a sad, muddy pond return to a place with plenty of water for the frogs to enjoy. After that, the students conducted a science experiment using shaving cream, water and food dye to see how clouds fill up and then produce rain! Please join us in congratulating the National Honor Society's newest members, who were celebrated at the induction ceremony on Thursday. These students have demonstrated exceptional scholarship, leadership, character, and service. We are incredibly proud of their accomplishments and the example they set for our school community. During the ceremony, Mrs. Stephanie Bacon, Executive Director of SYI, offered inspiring words of wisdom to our inductees. She encouraged them to never stop learning, to stay curious, and to remain open to perspectives different from their own. She reminded students that the four pillars of the National Honor Society serve not only as the foundation of NHS, but also as a guide for living a thoughtful and purposeful life. Mr. Eric Holler was recognized as the National Honor Society’s Teacher of the Year. Mr. Holler was celebrated for providing meaningful, real-world learning experiences and for helping students discover their passions. Students shared that he brings passion, purpose, and excellence to everything he does—qualities that enrich our school every day. Congratulations!

Springville Middle School Student Council is once again holding a Canned Food Drive to benefit the Springville Food Pantry. Grades 6-8 will compete to see which grade level can bring in the most non-perishable food donations between Monday, November 17, and Friday, November 21. The grade with the most donations will be treated to donuts during homeroom!

The first quarter's 8th-grade art students visited the Burchfield Penney Art Center. They took a docent-led tour of the galleries and were guided through an art-making experience that directly related to the artwork that was on exhibit. This trip allowed the students to see art from the past and present up close and provided them with a creative art-making opportunity. Recently, Mrs. Lewandowski’s 7th-grade ELA students finished reading "A Long Walk to Water." This story is about children who fled their homes without their families during the Sudanese Civil War. These children walked for years to try to find safety from the war, resulting in this group of boys being called "The Lost Boys of Sudan." Some of the boys were relocated to the United States to start their lives here. Mathon Noi, a “Lost Boy” relocated from South Sudan to Rochester, returned to SMS to share his experiences about his journey with students to help them make connections to the novel. Mathon shared his story and how he is giving back through his non-profit, Building Minds in South Sudan, which builds schools. This year, he brought another guest, Ted Avgerinos, who has traveled with Mathon to build schools in South Sudan.

8th graders in Mr. Stead's shop class have been making beautiful woodworking projects in time for the holiday season ... and hunting season. Charcuterie boards are becoming a hit, and students have also made a variety of other projects, including whitetail deer calls.

Last week, Springville Elementary held its annual Veterans Day Ceremony, an event that is beloved by both students and the community each year. Student Council members emceed the event, and musical performances were provided by the fourth- and fifth-grade chorus and the orchestra. Service members were asked to stand and be recognized as their branch was called. Then it was time for the grand gesture as students joined their families in the hall and the rest of their classmates filed past with a wave, a high five or a "thank you for your service." SES, as a school community, has a strong bond with those who have served our country. The SGI Varsity Swim Team recently took time during practice to invite girls interested in joining our team next season!
Led by Kiersten Crone, who created personal invitations for each potential new teammate, this initiative was all about agency, inclusion, and belonging. By empowering current athletes to reach out and welcome others, our swimmers are taking ownership of their team culture and creating a space where everyone feels valued and connected.
This experience wasn’t just about swimming — it was about experiential learning in action. The girls learned what it means to lead, mentor, and create opportunities for others to succeed — skills that extend far beyond the pool. Last night at the Section VI State Qualifier held at SUNY Erie’s Bert Flickinger Center, Corinne captured 1st place in the 500 Freestyle with an incredible personal best time of 5:24.84, dropping 2 seconds!
This victory secures her spot at the NYSPHSAA Girls Swimming & Diving State Championships at the Webster Aquatic Center, beginning Friday, November 21st!
After being out for most of the dual meet season due to injury, Corinne came back stronger than ever—showing remarkable determination, resilience, and love for the sport.
We couldn’t be prouder of Corinne for her hard work and dedication. This talented junior will be making her first appearance at the State Meet, and we can’t wait to cheer her on!

Continuing the tradition, the eighth-grade class celebrated Veterans Day on Thursday with a field trip to Shuttleworth Park and small group discussions with local veterans. Social Studies teacher Drew Beiter organized the day's events, which included the singing of the National Anthem, the recitation of the poem "In Flanders Fields," and Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. Before leaving the park, students heard from Gold Star Mother, Holly Baker. The trip ended with laying a wreath and the playing of Taps. The day continued with small group discussions with local veterans, family members of veterans and Honor Flight. "This day is always one of my favorites. By having our students connect with local veterans and with the beautiful war memorials at Shuttleworth Park, it is my hope that our students not only understand the importance of Veterans Day, but also take our servicemen's message of service, strength, and compassion to other areas of their life in the years ahead," Mr. Beiter said. Thank you to the Felton Burns VFW Post 5260, Jastry Amvets Post 219 and the Concord American Legion Post 431. A special thank you to our guest speakers and the American Legion Post 431 Color Guard!
Following the day's events, students will complete a writing assignment to reflect on what they learned about why we celebrate Veterans Day, the experiences of local veterans and things that they can do going forward. The first act that students have the opportunity to do is participate in Hat Day, with proceeds benefiting the Concord Veterans Care Project.
Middle school students in Mr. Reese's science class finished their unit on density with a project that was lighter than air! Students made hot air balloons out of tissue paper and then contributed to a massive class balloon. At the end of the week, the balloons were filled with hot air and released into the sky! Most of the balloons were caught by the students, but one got away! #ExperentialLearning #RedefiningRural
