Next week, our school district will observe our annual School Safety Week. The safety of our students and staff is our top priority, and these drills are a critical part of ensuring everyone is prepared.
During this week, all of our schools will practice required safety drills. We collaborate closely with local law enforcement, fire departments, and other emergency response partners to make sure our procedures are effective and aligned with the best practices for our community.
Every drill is conducted with our students’ well-being in mind. Our teachers will explain the procedures in an age-appropriate way. We use a trauma-informed approach, which means we focus on teaching students what to do without creating fear or alarm. Every drill will begin with an announcement: "This is a drill." Our goal is to make these exercises feel routine and instructional, not frightening.
Thank you for your partnership in helping our students understand the importance of these safety practices. We believe that by working together, we can create the safest possible learning environment for everyone.
If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to your child’s principal.

From seeds to salsa - students in Mr. Vogel's and Mrs. Sacilowski's class are enjoying the fruits of their labor! Last spring, the class received a grant from the Springville Griffith Community Education Foundation to make their annual Urban Garden Project even bigger and better. With the funds, they were able to buy more seeds, soil, heat lamps and equipment to grow a wide range of flowers, herbs, and vegetables. The students planted everything and cared for them until summer, then everything made its way to the Erie County Fair. Now, the garden is back at SGI, and the students are reaping the benefits of what they planted. Last week, students made salsa out of the veggies and herbs they grew from seeds!

The new agriculture class is off to a great start at SMS! Last week, eighth-grade students in Ms. Uhrinek's class welcomed New York State FFA Officers and an officer from California's FFA to participate in a special activity. In small groups, the students were given "seed packets" with instructions on how to ensure each plant would succeed. The instructions included the planting depth and distance, but also had tips like "cucumbers and tomatoes have a toxic relationship," which helped to inform the layout of the garden on their desks. After planning out their garden, they reflected on their own "chaos gardens," considering who is around them who builds them up. From there, the students were asked to write letters of gratitude to someone who supports them. Many wrote heartfelt messages to family members and friends.

It was a complete team effort from start to finish, and the Griff’s walked away with another big win!
Special shout-out to our bus drivers for being some of the loudest fans in the stands — and for getting us safely through rush-hour traffic to the game!
